hotelMarbella enjoys an international reputation as Europe’s leading holiday destination but what is perhaps less well known is that there are still pockets of peace and quiet where getting away from it all is made easy.

The village of Benahavís is the jewel in Marbella’s crown, its peaceful mountain setting in the southern part of the Serrania de Ronda ensures that residents and visitors alike are shielded from the bustle of the city. Yet this picturesque place also provides easy access to the centre of Marbella and Puerto Banús for those who like to add a little shopping and nightlife into the mix.

Close to the village square sits the Hotel Amanhavís, the Rolls Royce of boutique hotels. Its nine rooms each have their own very distinctive character, so spending a night or two in this beautiful hotel is like inhabiting the world of one of Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s thrilling novels. Choose from The Alchemist’s Laboratory, The Astronomer’s Observatory, The Catholic King’s Royal Quarters, The Christopher Columbus Berth, The Horse Thief’s Hideout, The Monastery’s Sanctuary, The Philosopher’s Study, The Spice Trader’s Caravan or The Sultan Boabdil’s Chamber: each room represents a different part of Spanish history.

This old cortijo (or farmhouse) has been brought back to life thanks to the enthusiasm and vision of its new owners, who have lovingly restored it to its former glory. Wit h its castellated turrets and roof terraces it casts a magical spell over the whole village.

Guests can also enjoy a dip in the outdoor swimming pool, which is always a peaceful place to relax. Another attraction that draws people from far and wide is Hotel Amanhavís’s wonderful restaurant, where the emphasis is on the best local ingredients and a Moorish influence is discernible. The hotel’s website describes it as “Creative Andalusian Cuisine”, the chef visiting the local market every day to find the best produce.

For a few days away from the pressures and tensions of everyday life, Hotel Amanhavís cannot be beaten.
