Technological advances that allow such equipment as solar panels to become an essential part of modern homes have had the additional effect of a more general rise in consciousness about the necessity to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions.

While there are many ways in which it possible to adapt the home to ensure that less energy is used in its maintenance, bio-climatic architecture goes one step further.

Born in Peru but now settled in Spain, architect Edwin Toledo has been involved in several projects on the Costa del Sol that utilise the principles of bio-climatic architecture, a tradition that he claims dates back to masters such as Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright: “These men were extremely sensitive to climate and the natural environment and actually were the pioneers behind air-conditioning, under-floor heating and solar architecture.”

However, bio-climatic architecture extends far beyond minor alterations within the home; ideally this should be a wholly organic process, the local environment and climate taken into account from the beginning of the project. “Even something like taking the time and trouble to work out what the ideal orientation of the building should be can have a profound effect on the amount of energy that is later used to heat or cool it,” says Edwin.

Bio-climatic architecture reaches further than features such as solar panelling and wood fired central heating, although designers eagerly embrace all available technology.
