Always striving to bring you something new in interior design, E91 has searched for the less obvious hidden gems, known only to limited groups such as specialized designers and luxury yacht owners. That’s why we invited Carol Scanu of Scanu Studios – one of the most resourceful designers when it comes to the interior of a boat – to share her works with our audience in Spain.

As owner of Studio Scanu, an award winning yacht design business based in Viareggio, Italy, Carol Scanu specializes in creating extreme makeovers for all types of boats, from brand new schemes to luxury refits designs according precise requirements and tastes.

scanu20Originally from the USA, Carol worked alongside her late husband Paolo, a naval architect and designer, 10 years ago her son Matteo joined the family firm. Today she has clocked up an impressive 33 years’ experience, spanning 5 continents and is currently working on project number 348.

In charge of interior design on sail and motor yachts measuring between 27 to 150 metres, Carol’s skills cover project management, exterior design, interior design and styling, counting high profile vessels such as New Sunrise, Georgia and Africa in her portfolio.

Unlike designing for a building where the only constraints are personal taste, lifestyle, budget and space - a yacht doesn’t have four walls.

Apart from its shape, there are additional considerations such as the fact it’s a boat with a myriad of regulations and codes that need to be taken into account.

Scanu studioClearly enjoying the challenge, Carol says, "These projects allow us a liberal choice in materials, fabrics and accessories from the humblest of woods to exotic veneers, from the clean stark lines of minimalism to the most complex boiserie with carvings and inlays.

"We always focus on the function of the yacht therefore avoiding sharp corners providing hand holds".

In future issues of Ogee, Carol will provide us with a glimpse into the world of luxury yacht design, showing us new, before and after of creative refits and news of current projects.
